Yahangala, located adjacent to the Knuckles Reserve in the Kandy District, is a prominent mountain peak that ranks highly among mountain climbers. The mountain can be easily accessed from Kalugala village, which lies near the Knuckles Reserve, and there are several forested paths that lead to this peak. Situated in the southern part of the Knuckles Reserve, the peak reaches an altitude of around 1300 meters.
Currently managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Yahangala is particularly famous for its association with the Ravana mythology. It is believed that the body of King Ravana, whose life was said to have ended, is buried here, according to popular legend.
The journey to Yahangala can begin from Kalugala village, and within about an hour, one can reach the Velangolla path. Alternatively, taking a left turn at the Three Man Junction and heading south will also lead to the Velangolla path, from where travelers can access Yahangala. Another route takes you through the difficult, remote village of Udagal Debokka, located within the reserve.
From the path near the mountain, you can get a beautiful view of Yahangala. A trail leading left from the path also takes you to the peak. Some sections require careful climbing. The rocky summit, surrounded by grass and scattered rocks, is devoid of plant life. The peak is clearly visible, having been struck by lightning. From the summit, you can see other mountains like Kelepathdoruwa, Lakegala, Garadigala, Medamahanuwara, and Dumbanagala, as well as distant landmarks like Mahiyangana, the Mahaweli River, Rathkinda Reservoir, and Sorabora Lake. During favorable weather conditions, the landscape is clear, and several wild animals can also be seen wandering in the area.
